A very cool thing happens to me when I hang laundry. I think about infinite number of people involved in this moment. Who are the people that crafted the clothesline, the clothes pins? Who’s involved in the creation of the fences the screw hooks? Who grew those trees and lumbered them? Who planted them and seeds of the lawn on which I’m standing, the folks who planted the yard? Who is responsible for weaving the towels, the T-shirts the jeans the washcloths? And where did the fabric come from -where did those fibers come from that wove those fabrics? And what of the folks who made the laundry detergent, who made the pipes to get the water into my washing machine, who made the washing machine where does the electricity come from who is responsible for that? The list goes on and on and on forever. That’s when I see that every moment and every task is also is meditation. We are all each of us connected.
In metta meditation one wishes for the contentment and safety of all sentient beings. From those we are closest to and to those most far away, geographically, culturally and intellectually.
The next time you put your clothes in the dryer please do consider some of what I mentioned above. Even better get yourself a clothesline. It could change your world view.
